Policy for Clients Under 18 – Confidentiality & Consent

At Cope & Hope, we are committed to providing a safe and supportive space for clients under the age of 18. We recognize the importance of protecting their privacy while ensuring that parents and guardians are informed and involved in the therapeutic process.

Confidentiality of Minors

Therapy sessions for clients under 18 are confidential. What is shared in sessions is treated with care and respect. Minors are informed about their rights to privacy and the limits of confidentiality in age-appropriate language.

Parental or Guardian Consent

Before beginning therapy, we require written consent from a parent or legal guardian. This ensures that the adult understands the nature of therapy, the goals, and the limits of confidentiality.

Informed Consent Process

  • We discuss with the parent or guardian the goals of therapy, potential benefits, and any risks.

  • Parents or guardians are informed about situations where confidentiality may be limited, such as risk of harm to self or others, or suspected abuse or neglect.

  • Minors are also informed, in an age-appropriate way, about what information may be shared with parents or authorities if necessary.

Minor’s Right to Confidentiality

  • Within the bounds of ethical and legal obligations, the therapist maintains confidentiality for sensitive discussions.

  • Minors are encouraged to share openly, knowing that their privacy is respected.

Exceptions to Confidentiality

Confidentiality may be limited in circumstances where safety is at risk, including:

  • Suspected abuse or neglect

  • Imminent risk of harm to self or others

  • Court-mandated disclosures

Whenever possible, the therapist will involve the minor in discussions about disclosures, appropriate to their age and maturity.

Parental Involvement

  • We encourage parental involvement where appropriate, such as collaborating on treatment goals or participating in family sessions.

  • Therapists communicate with parents or guardians about progress while respecting the minor’s privacy and best interests.

Review and Renewal of Consent

Consent and understanding of this policy may be reviewed periodically with parents or guardians to ensure clarity and comfort.
